There’s not much that could make me like Jane Austen books, but I recently purchased the gimmicky new books by Seth Grahame-Smith entitled, “Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies” along with “Sense, Sensibilities, and Seamonsters”. Both books are the actual abridged text of the popular Jane Austen books, but with a geeky twist. The “Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies” book obviously adds an undead element to the story and has Elizabeth running about taking out zombies in the middle of her romantic dealings with Mr. Darcy. Plus, in case that wasn’t geeky enough, they throw in some ninja action to boot. I have to admit, I haven’t actually read them all the way through yet. I actually have a hard time staying awake during the Jane Austen bits so I skip to the next “zombie” scene. Plus they’re illustrated. They’re nice little excursions from the originals and I’m having fun with the concept. But here’s why I’m posting… They are going to make a movie out of “Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies” produced by and starring non-other than Natalie Portman! That is just totally wacked out, but I’m kinda jazzed.
When I got the book, we started trying to come up with other geeky twists on classic novels. I think my favorite possible title was, Call of the Wild and Werewolves. But there could be others… Moby Dick vs. the Kraken, Sasquatch and the Last of the Mohicans, or Oliver Twist and the Giant Sewer Rats. See what you can come up with.
